Step into a World Woven by History and Culture
The Shogun Experience
Like a Scene from a Historical Scroll
The Procession of Honor is a precious moment to experience Japanese traditional culture and its spirit.
Yamaguchi City and the Ōuchi Clan
The Ōuchi Clan Laid the Foundations of Yamaguchi CityThe Ōuchi Clan Laid the Foundations of Yamaguchi City
It is said that the 24th head of the Ōuchi Clan, Hiroyo Ōuchi, appointed governor of Nagato and Suō provinces, moved the government seat to Yamaguchi around 1360 CE and began city planning modeled after Kyoto. Since then, successive heads of the clan followed Hiroyo’s example in city planning. Numerous temples and shrines associated with the Ōuchi Clan still stand in Yamaguchi City, where the skills and traditions have been carefully passed down.
The Relationship Between the Ōuchi Clan and Shogun Ashikaga Yoshitane
The 10th Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshitane, was driven out of Kyoto by his vassal, the Hosokawa Clan, and sought refuge with Ōuchi Yoshioki, the most powerful feudal lord in western Japan, based in Yamaguchi.
Ōuchi Yoshioki later succeeded in reinstating Yoshitane as Shogun and took control of the government as his guardian. He was appointed as the governor of Yamashiro (Kyoto), and in the era of his successor Yoshioki, the clan monopolized trade with China’s Ming dynasty and succeeded in developing the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
What is the Ōuchi Feast?
Ōuchi Yoshioki, who Entertained Ashikaga Yoshitane, the Former Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate
Ōuchi Yoshioki invited Ashikaga Yoshitane, the 10th Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, who had been driven out of Kyoto, to his residence on Ōdono Ōji in Yamaguchi City, where he hosted a grand banquet. The Ōuchi Feast is a faithful recreation of that banquet, based on the recorded menu from that memorable occasion.
Majestic Procession: The Revived Procession of Honor in Modern Times
Experience the Ancient Dignity in the Procession of Honor
The Procession of Honor was a prestigious event held when shoguns or feudal lords moved about publicly. The sight of armored samurai and attendants in splendid attire marching in neat formation conveys the grandeur and dignity of the past. The spectacle is as beautiful as a scene from a historical scroll, and on a grand scale, it brings the atmosphere of that era to the present.
