Chogen no Sato Village
Park closed for renewal
Chogen no Sato Village preserves the Tokuji area’s rich natural beauty and its distinctive history and culture. It is named for the Buddhist priest Chogen (1121 – 1206), who devoted himself to the rebuilding of Todai-ji Temple in the city of Nara after its destruction in the fires of war. Chogen came to Tokuji to source lumber for the rebuilding project.
Chogen no Sato Village is an activity park that recreates the mountain village scenery of the early Showa era (1926 – ca 1941), including thatched roofs and waterwheels in a lush woodland.
The many experiences available include making soba noodles, indigo-dyeing, papermaking, and woodworking. There is also a traditional tea shop, restaurant, gallery, and souvenir shops for people of all ages to enjoy.
