Jippotei Ishinkan (Jippotei History Museum)

Jippotei Ishinkan is a history museum focused on the history of Yamaguchi in the mid- to late-19th century when Yamaguchi was the strategic base for the Meiji Restoration that marked Japan’s transition into the modern era. Jippotei was an annex owned by the Bandai family, wealthy merchants who operated a soy sauce brewing business. The Bandai family were supporters of the pro-imperial leaders of the Meiji Restoration, many of whom, including Ito Hirobumi (the first prime minister of Japan) are thought to have frequented this site. The museum has a beautiful garden besides exhibits of historical artifacts and documents.
