ST. FRANCIS XAVIER MEMORIAL CHURCH
Yamaguchi’s catholic church was built in 1952 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Spanish missionary Francis Xavier’s arrival in Japan. Burnt down in 1991, it was rebuilt in 1998 thanks to citizen’s donations. Its contemporary structure resembles a large tent. The building houses a museum in its ground floor with displays related to Xavier’s life and the development of Christianity in Japan. As you leave the church, take the stairs that lead up to the hilltop Kameyama Park, for a panoramic view of the city.
