Toshunji Temple
Toshunji is a temple that honors Mori Motonari, a powerful warlord during the 16th-century Warring States period. Its gate is one of only a few temple gates in Japan dating from the Muomachi period (circa 1336–1573) to have four supporting pillars. The gate is thought to have belonged to an earlier temple at the site: Kokuseiji Temple, which had been built in 1404 by Ouchi Morimi, who also built Rurikoji Temple’s famous five-storied pagoda. To the left of the main hall is a smaller hall dedicated to Kannon, sometimes called the Goddess of Mercy. Both the gate and the Kannon Hall are nationally designated important cultural properties.
