Jippotei

Jippotei is a house separated from the main building of the wealthy merchant Bandai family and supported the Choshu Domain and patriots at the end of Edo period.

The Bandai family built this separated house with a fortune made from the soy sauce brewing business. Sufu Masanosuke started living in this place first, then Kusaka Genzui, Takasugi Shinsaku, Ito Hirobumi and Katsura Kogoro (Kido Takayoshi) visited and stayed. It became a place of discussion and brief rest.
There was also the time that Sugi Minji, older brother of Yoshida Shoin, opened a private school in the next building after the Meiji Restoration.
Furthemore various articles which were presented to Suketoku Suketoku after the Meiji Restoration have been preserved up to today, such as a teacup used by Kusaka at Jippotei, a letter to Katsura, big dippers contributed by Ito and Inoue Kaoru (both stored at the Museum of History and Folklore in Yamaguchi City) and others.
