Joei-ji Temple is the location of a renowned garden called Sesshutei , it is said to be designed by the master landscape painter Sesshu (1420–1506?). Celebrated as a masterpiece of Japanese garden design, it has been nationally designated as both a historical site and place of scenic beauty. Surrounded on three sides by woods, the garden features a path around a central pond in a space dotted with ornamental rocks. Seen from the main hall or the pathway, the garden affords a variety of lovely scenery from season to season. The temple also has a front garden as well as a splendid dry landscape garden.
