Site of Tsukiyama Residence

This is the site of the former Tsukiyama Residence, a detached villa of the Ouchi clan (rulers of Yamaguchi from the 14th to 16th centuries). It is said to have been built by Ouchi Norihiro around the middle of the 1400s. Like the Ouchi clan’s main residence, located just to the south, the Tsukiyama Residence is thought to have been modeled after the residence of the Muromachi shoguns in Kyoto. The site is now the location of Yasaka-jinjya Shinto Shrine and Tsukiyama Shrine, the latter of which is dedicated to Ouchi Norihiro.
