Rurikoji Temple’s Five-Storied Pagoda

Designated a national treasure, this pagoda is one of Japan’s “top three pagodas.” Ouchi Morimi, one of the heads of the Ouchi clan, which ruled Yamaguchi in the 14th to 16th centuries, built the pagoda to commemorate his older brother Ouchi Yoshihiro, who died leading a rebellion against the central government. Completed around 1442, the pagoda is a fine example of medieval Japanese architecture and hints at the splendor of the Ouchi era. With its elegant cypress bark roofs, superbly balanced form, and verdant setting, the pagoda is a must-see sight in any season.
